Recently, I made beautiful and cute cards for my mom. You won’t believe I created it at the last minute when I had nothing to buy from the shop. Since I was already late, I was looking for something special. Therefore, the idea of making this custom card came to my mind. But my mom says sharing is caring, so here I will share step-by-step instructions on how to make cards with Cricut. Let’s start!

 

Step 1: Choose a Card Design

Before teaching you how to make cards on Cricut Joy, I want you to find the best design that you can create. However, selecting a suitable card design is the foremost thing. Below, I have explained in detail how to find the card design from the Cricut app:

 

  1. First, launch the Design Space and go to the Canvas.
  2. On the left-hand toolbar, click on the Projects tab.
  3. On the top, you will see a drop-down menu adjacent to the search box.
  4. Choose Cards from the drop-down menu and select a design that you like.
  5. Click on the design that you like and know the materials you will need to create the card.
  6. Once you have found the design of your choice, then you have to hit the Make It button given in the lower right corner.
  7. After a window appears, select the On Card Mat and then click on the Cutaway Card + Backer option as the material.


 

Step 2: Preparing the Card Mat

In case you don’t know what a cutaway card is, it is nothing but a pre-made card with an adhesive present inside the front. In other words, you don’t have to use stencil images. Let’s follow the steps below to see the procedure for preparing a cutaway card and cutting card mat:

 

  1. Here, you have to remove the paper liner from the inside of your card.
  2. Then, place the backer sheet onto the adhesive with the colored side facing down towards the adhesive.


  1. Be sure to apply pressure firmly so that it sticks really well.
  2. After that, you will need to take a card mat and then peel off the plastic liner from the top of the mat.
  3. Then, place the card onto the adhesive mat.

 

Finally, we are ready to move to the next section, where we will actually learn how to make cards on Cricut Joy. Let’s proceed!

 

Step 3: Cutting Your Design

Now, we are going to cut the design on Cricut Joy that we created on Design Space. First of all, you have to connect it via Bluetooth. Once you have set up the machine then, you can press the Go button to insert the cutting mat into your Cricut machine.

 

In case your design requires you to use a pen, then you need to add the pen to your machine. Post this, you will be asked to insert the blade to cut the rest of your design.

 


 

The Joy machine will cut your cardstock only from the front side, except for the backing paper. This is really cool! Then, it will take a couple of minutes to finish the cutting. However, the time also depends on the complexity of your design.

 


 

Step 4: Take Off the Card From Your Cricut Mat

Cutting is done; now let’s move to the next process, where we will unload the mat and weed the design. Be sure to remove the mat gently and utilize the weeding tool in order to peel off the extra materials. For intricate or small designs, weeding tools are a must to avoid the risk of tearing your design.

 


 

But after removing the design from the mat, you should also use the scraper tool to remove the residue from the mat, as it will increase the life of your card mat.

 

Step 5: Assemble Your Greeting Card

At last, we will assemble the various pieces of cards together to make a complete card. To assemble, I will simply slide each corner of the insert paper into the cutout, as shown in the image below.
